Bulbophyllum
is one of large genus of orchid. This genus is
named by Aubert du Petit Thouars in 1822. The
name was originally published in Orchidees des Iles Australes de I' Afrique.
The generic name is derived from 2 Greek words, bolbos for bulb and phyllon,
a leaf, referring to the growth habit of many of the species in this wonderful
and at times bizarre, genus.
This
huge genus is estimated by some taxonomists and botanists that there are
up to 2,000 species around the world. It is one of the few genera that
occurs in tropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas.
Most of them grow as epiphytes or lithophytes. The flowers of this genus
vary in size, shape, form and color. |

In Thailand, they have found about 140 species of Bulbophyllum of which 44 species are endemic. Bulbophyllum is found in most forests in Thailand, mostly at 500 metres above sea level. The photographs of orchid shown in this website have been taken from my collection. Most of them are collected from the wild. In my opinion a lot of them look interesting for study and conservation. You can found their photos by clicking on the genus of orchids that interest you. After
having explored my site you will get a good idea of what these varieties
are like. And if you have any comment, or more information, please do
not hesitate to share it with me. Contact me at : exoticbulbo@yahoo.com.
